Where’s Vic? A Collection of Mascot Sightings

On a hot sunny day — a shadowy figure emerges from the deep crevices of Valhalla Park. Clad in hues of blue and orange, the helmeted figure approaches, his orange braids dangling beside him. This is none other than Vic the Viking, the school's beloved mascot.

As an avid lover of West Valley’s sporting events, I had the pleasure of spotting Vic several times. Pictured here is Vic at a softball match, in which he was terrorized by a group of amateur softball players. Though he stands at a mighty 8 feet tall, I watched as Vic was smited by a group of kindergartens — with his own weapons at that.

I had a chance to speak with Vic, and although he did not say a word, his warm, friendly smile was quite welcoming. When I asked him for a photo, he happily obliged.

Interestingly, I have observed a fascinating phenomenon regarding how Vic is perceived by different demographics. Though he is seemingly loved by children, he is universally hated by dogs. Great Danes and Chihuahuas alike bark with a distinct sense of disdain in Vic’s presence.

Despite being unfairly branded by dogs, however, I found Vic to be a quite enthusiastic and friendly presence, regardless of the event he was at. In addition to bearing our school’s colors, Vic is also an apt representation of West Valley’s values of friendship, community, and inclusion.
