Many of you have probably walked by and noticed the new building being constructed by the LASS edifice. I gained some new information regarding the long-anticipated opening of this building, the Wang & Qu Family Learning Resource Commons. I spoke with Joanna Messer, the Director of Library and Learning Support Services, to gain some new insights into the process, timeline, and what students can expect in the future.

The Wang & Qu Family Learning Resource Commons (LRC) will be a new facility housing all sorts of new spaces for students as well as combining a few resources under the same roof, which will be convenient for students! You will be able to make one stop for academic and learning resources. For example, the research support librarian and book checkout desk will be combined, making research help more accessible. At the same time, the Textbooks ‘n’ Technology program will continue, ensuring free materials for students to check out. Most notably, this new building will hold the library and Success Center, with more tutoring and study spaces available for students to use. The library will also have two meditation rooms and a lactation room.

In addition, some other resources will be relocated to the new building. SoAD programs like music technology and video production will have spaces opposite the library and Success Center. There will also be a maker space for faculty to work and meet with students, which will be a space for general making, zine making, and crafts.

The LRC is expected to have longer weekday hours and be open on Saturdays. With the LRC able to accommodate more students, it will be a perfect place for students to study during the intense midterms and finals seasons. There will be a cafe in the building with a coffee bar and grab-and-go meals serviced by Thomas Cuisine.

There are so many updates still to come, but there are exciting opportunities to look forward to with the long-awaited opening of this building. Some highlights include the new features, a shared resource space that will provide easy access for students, and more on-campus spaces. The move is expected to occur during the next academic year, with the opening celebration set for Spring 2026.
